Description:
Extremely Rare 1877 Judd-1543
Copper Dollar, PR65 Red and Brown
1877 $1 Dollar, Judd-1543, Pollock-1716, High R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. This unusual design shows the obverse of Liberty facing left, her hair bound by a coronet. On the extreme left side of the coronet there is a single bead that is isolated from the others. The motto is in small letters above the figure of Liberty and the date is below; 13 stars ring the left and right margins. The reverse has 1 DOLLAR in the center surrounded by a wreath of corn, wheat, and cotton with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and E PLURIBUS UNUM below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
This amazing Gem is almost entirely brilliant with orange mint luster on both sides with lovely accents of jade and violet. Both sides possess exceptional aesthetic desirability. A few tiny specks appear on Liberty's face and neck, but otherwise the surfaces are pristine.

We currently have records of just four known examples according to the following roster:

1. PR65 Red and Brown NGC. The present specimen.

2. PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
Abner Kreisberg (11/1970), lot 1308; Harry W. Bass, Jr. (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1274; Heritage (8/2001), lot 8388. The plate coin in Judd's 10th edition.

3. Proof 64 Red and Brown PCGS.
Matthew Stickney (Henry Chapman, 6/1907), lot 580; Clarence Bement (Henry Chapman, 5/1916), lot 166; Virgil Brand, private transaction through Henry Chapman in July 1916; Dr. J. Hewitt Judd; An Illustrated History of United States Coinage FPL (Abe Kosoff, 1962) lot 513; Heritage (1/2006), lot 3710. The original Judd plate coin.

4. PR60, Cleaned.
The Palace Collections of Egypt (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 1969; Goliad Corporation; Bowers and Ruddy (7/1981), lot 282. The Pollock plate coin.

Earlier Appearances.
The following citations probably represent earlier appearances of the coins listed above, but they cannot be linked to the later pedigree chains with any certainty:

B.
Doughty Collection (New York Coin & Stamp, 4/1891), purchased by Harlan Page Smith (bidding as "Clay"); H.P. Smith Collection (S.H. and H. Chapman, 5/1906), lot 1435.
