Description:
Sensational 1879 Washlady Dollar Pattern
Struck in Copper, Judd-1604, PR65 Red
1879 $1 Washlady Dollar, Judd-1604, Pollock-1799, High R.6, PR65 Red NGC. Liberty's lush hair is piled atop her head, with IN GOD WE TRUST above and 13 stars around. On the reverse a perched eagle holds an olive branch with seven leaves, and three arrows pass behind the wing. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR are at the rim. The Latin motto is in a wide inner arc above the eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
NGC has certified five examples of Judd-1604, and this specimen is the only full Red example they have graded. PCGS has graded six pieces, including one PR65 Red. The PCGS PR65 Red example appeared in David Akers' session of Auction '89, and the color of that coin is mellow compared to the present specimen. The coin offered today has fewer carbon specks and lacks the fingerprint appearance of the other Gem. Considering all of these aspects, we feel that the present Gem proof Washlady dollar is the finest known with full mint color. It is also more desirable than the few numerically superior pieces with Red and Brown or Brown color.
A faint patch of lilac is evident at the lower obverse, but the balance of the obverse and all of the reverse have blazing orange luster with frosty devices and fully mirrored fields. A single dark toning splash left of star 10 will serve those who seek numismatic pedigrees.
