Description:
Breathtaking 1883 Quarter Eagle
PR66 Ultra Cameo
1883 $2 1/2 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. There are two varieties of the 1883 proof quarter eagle, coming from a mintage of 82 coins. This Premium Gem is B-1, which, according to Walter Breen (1989), displays polish in the ear hole and an unpolished first stripe on the reverse shield.
This issue is subject to high date-collector pressure, owing to the extreme rarity of business strikes. NGC and PCGS have graded fewer than 50 1883 proof quarter eagles, some of which are likely resubmitted coins. Most of the certified specimens are Cameo or Ultra/Deep Cameo.
Gold-on-black contrast greets the viewer of this PR66 Ultra Cameo, as frosty motifs appear to float upon deep watery fields. An exacting strike leaves bold detail on the design elements, further enhancing the coin's eye appeal. Immaculately preserved throughout. Census: 2 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 2 finer (4/09).
