Description:
Collectible 1852 Assay Office Fifty
900 Thous., K-14, VF30
1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. VF30 PCGS. K-14, High R.5. Although dated 1852, the K-14 .900 THOUS. pieces were an emergency issue, actually produced to the extent of 13,800 coins in January 1853. Whether a sudden need impelled the production, or whether the production of new dies was simply viewed as a wasteful expense, is unrecorded today. Most survivors of the issue are well circulated, however. This VF30 piece shows moderate, even wear throughout both sides. There are a couple of rim bumps--not at all unusual for these large, heavy coins--and a couple of shallow vertical scratches appear in the left portion of the machine-turned reverse. There is light porosity on the reverse rim at 9 o'clock, likely a function of incomplete alloy mixing and also not uncommon. None of these minor problems interfere with the appeal, the collectibility, or the historic interest of this fascinating Territorial gold piece. Listed on page 364 of the 2009 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10019)
