Description:
Pleasing and Desirable 1799 S-189 Cent, VF35
1799 1C VF35 PCGS. S-189, B-3, R.2. Breen Die State V. The 1799 is famous as the key to the entire series of large cents; it is the date that every collector desires, and few ever obtain. Fewer than 1,000 of these coins still exist today from an unknown original mintage, and most of those that do exist are in extremely low grade, or damaged in some way. The present piece is an incredible exception to that rule.
Smooth olive and chocolate-brown surfaces are free of all but a few insignificant handling marks. A tiny circular mark joins the tops of E and N in CENT, and a minor lamination mark is evident from the wreath to the F in OF. The date is bold and complete, and LIBERTY, while weak, is also fully visible. The lower reverse is somewhat weak in correspondence with the upper obverse.
This example is a late die state with narrow rim breaks visible in the dentils left and right of the first A in AMERICA. The obverse has a short crack that joins the rim to the top of the drapery at 4:30. The die chip between the E in ONE and T in CENT, seen to some degree on all genuine 1799 Normal Date cents, is boldly visible on this pleasing piece.
We are unable to determine the past provenance of this piece. A review of all the coins listed in the Bland Census and the 2005 Noyes Census, those that have plated auction appearances, finds no matches. Only a single catalog has yet to be examined, and that is the French's (3/1967) catalog of the Dr. Jasper Robertson Collection. MRB VF25.(Registry values: N7079) (#1443)

Testimonials:
Due completely to Heritage's thoroughly diligent and professional management and promotion of the collection, the faraday Collection stirred national attention among numismatists and the auction results brought a gross value greater than that last estimated by the experienced collector.
