Description:

Singular Superb Gem 1914 Quarter Eagle

1914 $2 1/2 MS67 PCGS. This is the single finest 1914 quarter eagle in the combined certified population (2/10), but that fact, while impressive, is not the most important aspect of this Superb Gem's condition rarity. For the entire Indian quarter eagle series, the PCGS Population Report shows just four MS67 coins with none finer! Two pieces dated 1908, one coin dated 1929, and this 1914 example are the only options for the collector seeking a PCGS-graded Superb Gem.
Of the three dates, the 1914 is far and away the most elusive, adding an extra element of desirability. Its mintage of 240,000 pieces marks it as the Philadelphia date with the lowest production, and only the famous 1911-D has a lower mintage across all issues. As in the official mintage figures, the 1914 is also the second-lowest representation in the PCGS Population Report, with only about 350 more certification events than the key date. While the close figures can be explained largely by the presence of many circulated 1911-D quarter eagles, the numbers do open up another window on how challenging the 1914 issue can be.
This subtly frosted gold-orange beauty looks every bit the Superb Gem, with impressive detail and remarkable preservation. On the reverse, a handful of tiny marks are visible in the fields, but these minuscule flaws have effectively zero bearing on the eye appeal. This is an important opportunity that may not be repeated for years to come, and the wise prospective purchaser will bid accordingly.

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
