Sharp Near-Mint 1850 Double Eagle
From the
S.S. Republic

1850 $20 AU58 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. This first-year double eagle was recovered from the wreck of the sidewheel steamship, lost in a storm off the coast of Georgia in 1865 and found in 2003. She carried a cargo of $400,000 in mostly gold ten and twenty dollar coins when she sank. This well-struck near-Mint State piece has semiprooflike yellow-gold surfaces with minor abrasions scattered over each side.

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
