Description:

High Grade 1860-O Double Eagle, AU53
Key New Orleans Issue

1860-O $20 AU53 PCGS. The 1860-O is one of the rarest New Orleans double eagles, coming from a mintage of only 6,600 pieces. PCGS and NGC combined have graded slightly more than 100 examples, many of which are likely resubmitted or crossed-over coins. A single specimen has been designated Mint State--an NGC MS62. Very Fine and Extremely Fine pieces are typically seen. Low-end About Uncirculated coins are rare and specimens in the higher range of this grade are extremely rare.
Attractive yellow-gold and apricot patination is seen over both sides of this AU53 specimen and considerable luster is visible in the areas around and the interstices of the design motifs. Ordinarily, the 1860-O is not a well struck issue. The first four stars are usually weak, which shows to a certain extent on the present coin. Liberty's hair, however, is somewhat better defined on this piece than ordinarily seen, and the horizontal stripes are very sharp, an unusual characteristic of the date. Most of the eagle's plumage is also strong.
The coin's surfaces, while revealing a few small marks, are free of the deep, detracting marks seen on the majority of 1860-O double eagles. These attributes add up to above-average eye appeal for this particular specimen, a significant point as most survivors are poor in this regard. The aficionado of rare gold coinage will want to give serious attention to this piece as it will be extremely difficult to locate a finer specimen. Population: 10 in 53, 8 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N4719) (#8930)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
