Flip-Over Triple Struck 1796 S-89 Cent, VF Details
Extremely Rare Early Cent Error

1796 1C Liberty Cap Flip-Over Triple Strike--Scratches--NGC Details. VF. S-89, B-10, R.3 The NGC holder labels this as double struck; however, it is actually a flip-over triple strike, the second such 1796 Liberty Cap in this auction. It also has a planchet clip at 11 o'clock, although unfortunately the tab on the NGC holder perfectly covers the clip.
The first strike was an off-center strike from the S-89 dies, perhaps 10% off-center. The second strike was rotated about 90 degrees from the first strike. The third strike is the flip-over strike, without further rotation from the second strike. Evidence of the first and third strike is boldly visible, while evidence of the second strike appears in the form of ST from STATES, visible on the cap of the third impression. All past owners, including Ted Naftzger, have called this piece a flip-over double strike, until the consignor to the present sale took a closer look.
The surfaces of this specimen are outstanding, despite the minor scratches, with olive and dark brown color and few other blemishes. MRB VF20.
Ex: George H. Decker (10/1976); R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; 1990 Early American Coppers Sale (5/1990), lot 34; Chris Victor-McCawley. (#1392)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
