Description:
1788 Mailed Bust Right Connecticut Copper
R.6, M. 3-B.2, Pleasing XF45 Example
1788 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Mailed Bust Right XF45 NGC. M. 3-B.2, W-4415, R.6. The reverse is most easily attributed by the branch hand that is opposite E, the star opposite the center of E, and in the date the 1 is upright and distant from the 7. This variety is seldom offered and we do not have any comparables in the XF grade range. The Whitman reference lists a VF in a 2000 auction appearance that realized $3,737.50. Another VF brought $1,265 in 2006. There is a lot of blue sky between the price of those two VF coins. This is a well-defined example that has uniformly dark surfaces and micro-granularity from the planchet stock. There are no mentionable abrasions and the only flan cracks are in the area of the eye on the obverse. It should be interesting to see what this coin fetches at public auction. Listed on page 60 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB XF40.
Purchased from Richard Picker (8/17/1967).
