Description:
AU 1788 Connecticut Copper, M. 3-B.2
Struck Over a Nova Constellatio
R.6, Showing Most of the Undertype
1788 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Mailed Bust Right--Struck Over a Nova Constellatio--AU50 NGC. M. 3-B.2, W-4415, R.6. A fascinating piece that shows most of the undertype--the central eye on the obverse and several distinct partial glory of rays on the central figure and a star directly in front of the mouth. The reverse shows much less of the undertype with a few leaves of the wreath visible on the upper torso of Liberty. Both sides have even, dark brown patina. Two other examples are mentioned in the Whitman reference that are struck over Novas. One was in a Pine Tree Auction in 1975, the other was predictably from John Ford's collection and realized $14,950. Listed on page 60 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB XF45.
Purchased from A.D. Hoch (11/17/1961) for $70.
