Description:
1839-C Classic Head Quarter Eagle, AU58
Two-Year Mintmark Type Coin
1839-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Breen-6150, Winter-2, Variety-22, R.4. The 1839-C Classic Head quarter eagle is popular with mintmark type collectors as the second year of a two-year design type. The reported mintage was 18,140 pieces, and Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 300-400 examples in all grades. Perhaps 70-115 coins are extant at AU levels. Three varieties are known for the date, with this example representing the rarest Winter-2 variety, with the 3 in the date recut and the mintmark centered over the gap between the 8 and 3. This specimen displays light greenish-gold surfaces, with much remaining mint luster. The reverse is sharply struck, but the obverse shows a little softness on the star centers. Census: 79 in 58, 18 finer (9/10).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25G4, PCGS# 7699)
