1796 Draped Bust Quarter, B-1, VG8
Only Date With Small Eagle Reverse
1796 25C VG8 PCGS. CAC. B-1, R.4. The 1796 Draped Bust quarter is a numismatic milestone, as this date marks the first mintage for the denomination. The 1796 is also the only quarter to feature the Small Eagle reverse, making the issue extremely popular with type collectors. Two die varieties are known for the year, with this coin representing the scarcer B-1 variety, characterized by the lower 6 in the date. Only 6,146 quarters were struck in 1796.
The present coin is a well worn specimen, but most of the major design elements retain their outlines and some interior detail. The coin shows more wear on the peripheries than in the centers, but the date and legends are still easily readable. Light gray and blue-steel patina blankets the lightly abraded surfaces. A few long, thin scratches are evident on the lower reverse. Housed in a green label holder.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)
