Superb Gem Proof 1914 Quarter Eagle
One of the Finest Examples Obtainable
1914 $2 1/2 PR67 NGC. The 1914 proof quarter eagle is quite a different issue from the previous year. The mintage is significantly lower -- only 117 proofs were produced, as compared to 165 for the 1913 coins. Garrett and Guth write of the issue:

"The Philadelphia Mint again revised the matte Proof process for 1914 quarter eagles, using a darker, coarser sandblast finish than seen on the 1912 to 1913 issues. The microscopic facets are larger than seen in prior years, and thus the reflectivity is less noticeable."


Our in-house records indicate that the average 1914 proof grades 63.5 and Garrett-Guth found an average of 64.2. This splendid coin is among the few finest known of the estimated 60-70 pieces estimated extant today. NGC has certified a mere 12 pieces in PR67 with four coins finer, including possible resubmissions. PCGS, interestingly, has never certified an example in either the PR66 or PR67 grade (3/11).
The prevailing coloration on the present PR67 specimen is greenish-tinged yellow-gold with accents of green, over fine-grained surfaces that exhibit no noticeable contact marks. The surfaces are not perfect, but their only imperfection lies in a Mint-made flaw: On the right side of the reverse, through the TR in TRUST, one can detect a curious, raised diagonal planchet lamination into the right field below. This is really quite interesting and unusual to find on a proof gold coin.
