1838-C Classic Head Quarter Eagle, MS61
Low-Mintage First Year of Design
1838-C $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Breen-6147, Winter-1, Variety-20, R.3. The 1838-C quarter eagle is a scarce issue, from a small mintage of 7,880 pieces. Only one die variety is known for the date. The Classic Head design was introduced in 1838, and a few specimens were probably saved as curiosities, accounting for the small supply of Mint State coins available today. Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 150-200 pieces in all grades, with 8-10 examples in Mint State.
The present coin is an attractive MS61 specimen, with bright greenish-gold surfaces that display prooflike reflectivity in protected areas. The design elements are sharply detailed, and some obverse stars show evidence of doubling. The mintmark has been repunched, and the remnants of the undertype C can be observed in a lower position, actually touching the top of the 3 in the date. Population: 2 in 61, 4 finer (5/11).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25FZ, PCGS# 7697)
