1871-CC Liberty Ten, XF45
Elusive Second-Year Issue
1871-CC $10 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Variety 2-A. The 1871-CC Liberty eagle boasts a small mintage of just 8,085 pieces, accomplished in the second year of operations at the famous Carson City Mint. All Carson City eagles from the 1870s are elusive, so the 1871-CC does not stand out in the context of the series, but the date is very scarce in absolute terms. Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 90-100 pieces in all grades, with about 30 examples extant at the XF level.
The present coin is a Choice XF example, with light wear on the devices and a moderate number of minor abrasions in the fields. The surfaces show a blend of orange and greenish-gold highlights, while traces of mint luster cling to protected areas near the devices. Population: 17 in 45, 17 finer (5/11).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 264X, PCGS# 8661)
