Exceedingly Rare 1881 Twenty Dollar
AU50, Few Finer Known
1881 $20 AU50 PCGS. Gold experts Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth call the 1881 double eagle a "major rarity in all grades," given its extremely low mintage figure of 2,199 business strikes, one of a string of such issues from the late 1870s though the early 1890s. Much semiprooflikeness clings to the yellow-gold surfaces, unsurprisingly for an issue with such a low production. The strike is strong overall, although some weakness in the centers combined with light wear makes ERTY merge with the top of the coronet. A small grease stain appears on the lower-left reverse, along with a light scrape under PLURIBUS. An extreme rarity: PCGS has seen only six submissions at the AU50 grade level, with only 10 finer (5/11). An AU53 PCGS example brought $37,375 in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2011), lot 5268.
