1808 S-278, B-2 Cent, AU55
First Classic Head Issue
1808 1C AU55 PCGS. S-278, B-2, R.3. MRB AU50. Breen Die State III or possibly later, with the injured rim described for that state. There is no evidence of the obverse rim breaks found in later die states. Although slightly scarce, S-278 makes frequent auction appearances, even in higher grades. The variety is a suitable candidate for type or date collections.
This lovely cent has light chestnut-brown surfaces with a few darker olive splashes on the obverse and deeper steel on the reverse. A small spot is noted close to the O in ONE. A few trivial surface marks will confirm the pedigree of this example. Noyes calls it XF40, with the sharpness five points finer, and tied for 19th place in his 2005 census.
Originally from Boston, Douglas F. Bird was raised in California and still lives there today. A full-time copper dealer since 1982, Bird began collecting coins in 1953 and joined Early American Coppers in 1973. His name was published as a new member of EAC in the same issue of Penny-Wise as the present cataloger.
Ex: Doug Bird (3/2/1996); Jon Alan Boka.
