Collectible First-Year 1813 Half Eagle
Select Mint State, BD-1
1813 $5 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6457, BD-1, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Obverse State a / Reverse State a, no clashes, cracks, or lapping. The 1813 BD-1 is the "only readily available date and variety" of this type, according to Bass-Dannreuther; Harry Bass owned three examples. The 1813 is a first-year type of the Capped Head to Left design, one of the John Reich creations. The Guide Book notes that the 1813-15 issues are a separate Bold Relief subtype, although few collectors realize it or collect them in that way, as the 1814/3 is rare and the 1815 is a legendary star in the numismatic firmament. The availability of the 1813 BD-1 coins is accordingly doubly welcomed by collectors. This Select Mint State coin displays bright yellow-gold, red-tinged surfaces that are sharply struck, unlike many examples seen. The only mentionable strike softness is on the eagle's right (facing) wing. Contact marks are minimal for the grade level, and there are no singular abrasions. A highly collectible example of this early 19th century type.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PM, PCGS# 8116)
