Low-Mintage 1859-S Dollar, MS62
First San Francisco Silver Dollar
1859-S $1 MS62 NGC. The 1859-S was the first dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, which had opened five years earlier, and the last S-mint dollar until the extremely rare 1870-S was struck more than a decade later. Only 20,000 pieces were minted, a low number compared to some of its contemporaries (the 1859 had a mintage of 255,700 pieces and the 1859-O had a mintage of 360,000 coins), and it is clear from the certified population data that the virtually all 1859-S dollar saw circulation.
Mint State examples are highly elusive: NGC and PCGS combined have graded only 35 such specimens. At the MS62 level, NGC reports six pieces (plus one in MS62 Prooflike) with only five finer (9/11). This brilliant representative boasts semiprooflike fields, as often seen on silver dollars from the 1840s and 1850s. The peripheral design details are sharply defined, while the centers are a trifle soft. There are no individually significant marks. A pleasing example of this conditionally rare issue.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24YZ, PCGS# 6948)
