Well-Defined 1872-CC Dollar, AU58
Low Survival Rate
1872-CC $1 AU58 PCGS. Relatively few of the 3,150 silver dollars that were produced at the Carson City Mint in 1872 have survived. Specifically, Rusty Goe in his The Mint on Carson Street estimates that between 250 and 300 pieces have survived in all grades, and around 20 in Mint State. These figures more or less correspond with the number of pieces certified by PCGS and NGC. Perhaps the reason for the small number of extant Mint State coins is that the majority of examples were exported to China, melted, lost, or some combination thereof.
This near-Mint State specimen is essentially untoned and retains traces of luster in the recessed areas. The design features are quite well impressed, save for weakness in the hair atop Liberty's head. A couple of minute milling marks are visible in the right obverse field, and magnification reveals wispy hairlines in the obverse fields. Probably the finest example that most collectors will be able to locate. Population: 11 in 58, 10 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24ZK, PCGS# 6969)
