Description:
1793 S-8, B-13 Wreath Cent, MS62 Brown
Vine and Bars
1793 1C Wreath Cent, Vine and Bars MS62 Brown NGC. S-8, B-13, R.3. AU50 MRB. Horizontal Stem / Triangular Bow. The Horizontal Stem is seen only on one obverse die that was used for S-8, S-9, and NC-4. The reverse die with its triangular-shaped ribbon bow appears only on S-8. The reverse has a diagonal die bulge inside the wreath that is seen to some extent on all known examples, becoming stronger in late die states. Breen Die State II with the 93 defective and with a delicate die crack diagonally across the reverse, along the bulge from the first T in STATES toward the final A.
This piece has medium brown surfaces with noticeable cartwheel luster on both sides. Lighter reddish tan is noted around the devices. The strike is sharp and the centering is excellent with full border beads and outer margins on both sides. Surface marks are minimal with a few tiny rim nicks at the bottom of the reverse.
Apparently below the census level, there is no record of a past provenance for this delightful example, although it is probably one of the top 20 survivors. Del Bland records two Mint State pieces, seven that he grades AU55, and three that he grades AU50. Bill Noyes records a similar census with one Mint State coin, six graded AU55, two in AU50, and three in XF45. We believe that neither Bland nor Noyes was familiar with this coin, and it may find a new spot in those records. A wonderful opportunity for the specialist.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 223H, PCGS# 1347)
