Description:
1796/5 Small Eagle Five Dollar, Breen-6418, BD-1, AU Details
A Highly Desirable Type Coin
1796/5 $5 Small Eagle -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Breen-6418, BD-1, High R.4. This is the only variety of the year, showing a 6 over an obvious 5. Mintages for Capped Bust to Right, Small Eagle reverse five dollar gold pieces (1795-1798) are low, and survivors of any date are very scarce, making it one of the most desirable and valuable of early type coins. Indeed, a type set of U.S. coinage cannot be considered complete without a Small Eagle example.
The present offering is thus an important one in the current sale, displaying as it does strong AU Detail on all of its design features; in other words, this coin reveals no areas of mentionable weakness. Even the dentilation on each side is sharp, and the devices are nicely centered on the planchet. Light to medium intensity yellow-gold patination in the centers yields to reddish-gold at the margins, and close inspection shows no contact marks worthy of note. Fine hairlines are visible under magnification, accounting for the NGC disclaimer. These are not all that bad, however, and glimpses of luster can still occasionally be seen as the coin is rotated under a light source.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25NE, PCGS# 8067)
