Description:
1849 Norris, Gregg, and Norris Five, MS60
Reeded Edge, Period After ALLOY, K-4
1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar R.E. MS60 PCGS. Gold CAC. K-4, R.4. The firm of Norris, Gregg, and Norris probably issued the first California Territorial Gold coins in May of 1849. The coins bore the mysterious initials N.G & N., which were only deciphered in 1902 when the Chapman brothers sold the collection of Augustus Humbert and found a note explaining "the long sought for name of the firm issuing this coin." Unfortunately, the Chapman's rendering of the name was Norris, Grigg, and Norris, but this was close enough to eventually identify the firm. The present coin is a delightful Mint State specimen, with vibrant mint luster and pleasing green and reddish gold surfaces. The reeded edge and period after ALLOY identify the scarce K-4 variety. Housed in a green label holder with a gold CAC sticker. Listed on page 366 of the 2012 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 60, 4 finer (11/11).
