Description:
1853 Moffat Twenty Dollar, K-19
Well-Detailed, Even Green-Gold Color
1853 $20 Moffat & Co. Twenty Dollar Genuine PCGS. K-19, High R.5. The PCGS number ending in .92 Cleaning as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an AU specimen that has been cleaned. The last Moffat twenty dollar issue was struck in 1853, after John Little Moffat had retired from the U.S. Assay Office, and the pieces closely resemble their federal cousins from the same era, save for MOFFAT & CO. appearing on the coronet, and SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA encircling the reverse rim. Even green-gold color appears on each side of this piece. The cleaning came in the form of an apparent dipping that has removed much of the luster. Much detail remains on this piece, but the only mentionable signs of contact are a shallow scrape in the right field behind Liberty's hair and two scrapes above the eagle's head, one of which is in the oval of stars. Listed on page 371 of the 2012 Guide Book.
