Mint State 1909-O Five Dollar
End of an Era in New Orleans
1909-O $5 MS60 NGC. By 1909, the New Orleans Mint was an obsolete antique. Reopened in 1879 after a hiatus during the Civil War and Reconstruction, it was the last of the original branch mints in use, and it suffered by comparison to the main Mint in Philadelphia and the branch mints, San Francisco and especially the newly established facility in Denver. For its last year of production, 1909, the New Orleans Mint struck a single gold issue, 34,200 half eagles, whose survivors collectively form a key date among Indian half eagles even as they close the Southern gold chapter of U.S. Mint history.
A scarce Mint State survivor, this MS60 coin has a number of light digs and abrasions, especially in the area of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Yet for all the evidence of coin-to-coin contact, this apricot-gold piece is luminous throughout and has no trace of wear. The winning bidder likely will be someone able to appreciate its qualities in person; neither text nor images can convey all the facets of this piece.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
