Important PR66 Cameo 1906 Twenty
Tied for Finest Certified
1906 $20 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. The 1906 is among the last proof Liberty double eagle issues, its published mintage of 94 pieces respectable but not among the top few for the date. The issue falls well within the "brilliant era" of U.S. Mint proofs, yet a significant balance of coins -- more so for NGC than PCGS -- earned Cameo designations from the grading services. High grades are far more challenging to come by; NGC has graded just three coins at the PR66 level, two of them Cameo, while PCGS recognizes no coins above PR65. Out of 94 pieces, somewhere between 45 and 60 specimens survive today; the total number of certification events between NGC and PCGS is 99 as of this writing (2/12), ample proof that resubmissions are rampant.
This PR66 Cameo coin, the only one of the two top-line pieces to receive a CAC green label, has many characteristics of the proof 1906 double eagle. The cameo effect is light but distinct, owing to the faintness of the frost across the portrait; the eagle is better-frosted but shows the date's characteristic striking weakness on the neck feathers. Pale yellow-gold mirrors offer all-around excellence, and aside from a small Mint-made crease or ripple in the upper shield, the surfaces are remarkably free of disturbances, a refreshing change from the date's Choice proof standard. This would make a fitting coin for the penultimate slot in an elite collection of proof Liberty double eagles.
