Description:
1914 Twenty Dollar, Matte PR66
Outstanding in All Aspects
1914 $20 PR66 NGC. The 1914 Saint-Gaudens double eagle saw 70 proofs struck in that year and is among the rarest of the series. James Halperin et al., writing in The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (2006), estimate that 25 to 30 different examples are extant. David Akers in his 20th Century United States Gold Coins (2008) puts the survival range at 25 to 35 pieces. NGC and PCGS combined have certified 46 specimens, some of which are likely resubmitted or crossover coins. Our records indicate that the 1914 proof twenty dollar has made 34 appearances at auction between 1990 and 2011. A number of them, of course, are likely duplicates.
The present Premium Gem proof displays deep mustard-gold surfaces with a superfine-grained texture. A well directed strike has created bold definition on the design elements, including Liberty's facial features, hair, drapery, fingers, toes, and the heart-shaped sandal ornament. The reverse devices are likewise crisp, including the eagle's plumage, beak, and claws. A partial wire rim is evident on both sides, especially the reverse. A tiny contact mark is noted on the ray between TR in TRUST and another on the right upright of U in the same word. They do not detract and are mentioned only because they will help pedigree the coin for future catalogers and researchers.
This is a super representative of early 20th century matte proof gold that will satisfy the most discriminating collector. Census: 9 in 66, 7 finer (4/12).(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 26H3, PCGS# 9211)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
