Description:
1851 Reeded Edge Humbert Fifty, K-7, VF35
887 Thous., Intensely Appealing
1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous. VF35 PCGS. K-7, R.4. The 1851 Humbert fifty dollar octagonal pieces were struck in Lettered Edge or Reeded Edge styles, both appearing with the .880 or .887 Thous. fineness. The Reeded Edge .887 Thous. K-7 variety shows a small-sized concentric circle on the reverse and outer ribbon away from the edge, while the K-6 shows a medium-sized concentric circle and ribbon closer to the edge. The rarity factors listed in Kagin (1981) are quite out of date, and both varieties are likely R.4, still very scarce.
This Choice VF example shows original reddish-tinged surfaces with some of the expected rim bumps and circulation wear, but the appeal is intense despite the grade. These coins have a historic piquancy that time (or circulation) can scarcely erase. Kagin's reference correctly notes that the U.S. Assay Office was a provisional U.S. Mint at the time these pieces were struck, and they should be considered as part of the traditional U.S. regular issues. Listed on page 377 of the 2013 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10214)
