1800 Half Dime, V-1, LM-1, MS64+
Eye-Appealing, Lustrous Surfaces
1800 H10C MS64+ PCGS. CAC. V-1, LM-1, R.3. The Mint engraver used a small "o" punch twice to make the 8 in the date on this oddity. The V-1, LM-1 variety is rather easily recognized not only by the large, misshapen 8 but also by the lack of the LIBEKTY feature and stars 1 and 2 showing weak lower points. This was the only use of this distinctive obverse. The reverse shows a leaf touching the left diagonal of the last A in AMERICA, and the last T in STATES has an upright over the left edge of cloud 3. The top of the eagle's beak touches a star point. This was the first use of this reverse, along with the exceedingly rare V-3, LM-2. The present near-Gem shows some of the light die clashing and cracking around the date, the digits 00 in particular. The lustrous surfaces show a light pinkish-gray overlay, melding into charcoal bits at a couple of areas in the shield on the reverse. The eye appeal is excellent, and there are no mentionable marks or other distractions. Population for the issue: 13 in 64 (1 in 64+), 6 finer (5/12).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 2326, PCGS# 4264)
