1794 S-48, B-38 Cent, Fine Details
The Famous Starred Reverse
1794 1C Starred Reverse -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. Fine. S-48, B-38, R.5. Enough specimens have been discovered in recent years that the Starred Reverse is about to fall to R.4. However, it remains arguably the most famous variety among all early cents. Sheldon noted that collectors speak of the Starred Reverse with "religious awe." The variety was discovered 135 years ago, and about two years pass between each new example.
This example, like all Starred Reverse cents, has strong obverse details and weak reverse details, although at least two thirds of the stars are visible. The reverse border is especially strong below, and to the left, like most known specimens. Cleaned and recolored, the obverse is dark brown with old verdigris, and the slightly porous reverse is a trifle lighter brown. Our EAC grade VG7.
