Choice AU 1802/1 Two and a Half, BD-3
Appealing Example of This Early Type
1802/1 $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. BD-3, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The 1802-dated quarter eagles were the first struck since those bearing the date 1798 (despite the overdate no 1801s are known), using three different die pairings. The BD-3 is rare but somewhat less so than the BD-2. All three varieties share the same obverse die, so the date 1802 is sufficient for that side. The reverse of the BD-3 is distinguished by recutting on the first star, and the upright of the E in STATES is just about centered between cloud spaces. (This reverse was also used to coin silver dimes dated 1802 and 1803.) The present Choice AU example shows antique-gold coloration overall with a few diagonal planchet adjustment marks in the central obverse, along with some small planchet indents, as made. The strike is correspondingly weak on the upper eagle's neck on the reverse, but there are few mentionable contact marks on either side. A nice, lightly circulated example of this early type.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25F6, PCGS# 7650)
