1812 Five Dollar, Problem-Free MS63
Wide 5D, BD-1
1812 $5 MS63 NGC. Wide 5D, BD-1, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The dies are unclashed and uncracked on each side, giving the prime die state. The two varieties of 1812 half eagles, struck to the extent of some 45,000 to 60,000 coins according to Bass-Dannreuther, share a common obverse, with the two reverses distinguished by the spacing of the 5D denomination, the Wide 5D (BD-1) and Narrow 5D (BD-2). The BD-1 is seen far more frequently than the BD-2, with Bass-Dannreuther estimating that 300 to 450 examples survive of the former, at R.3, and 80 to 100 of the latter, at High R.4. This BD-1 shows attractive greenish-gold surfaces that are free of major marks, although the "curious die lines" that Bass-Dannreuther refer to appear on the reverse, one from the rim at 2 o'clock through the right (facing) wing, a second curving through the horizontal shield lines and terminating in the left wing. Moderate horizontal planchet adjustment marks cross the obverse at Liberty's mouth, cheek, and ear area. Census: 26 in 63, 33 finer (7/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PL, PCGS# 8112)
