Description:
1918/7-D Nickel, Near-Mint Example
Rarely Found in Such High Grade
1918/7-D 5C AU58 PCGS Secure. FS-101. The 1918/7-D overdate Buffalo nickel comes with a couple of interesting diagnostics that can help attribute genuine specimens; nonetheless, most collectors would do well to buy only key-date coins encapsulated and authenticated by reputable third-party grading services such as PCGS, NGC, or ANACS.
Here are several little-known diagnostics:

Obverse
--The two corners of the 7 in the date will appear at either side of the top of the 8, even on examples that have seen considerable wear. The top horizontal bar of the 7 extends above the 8.
--The diagonal of the 7 is straight and appears in the right half of the upper loop and the left half of the lower loop.
--A wispy die crack runs from the tie of the braid onto the Indian's cheek.
--The designer's initial looks like a P rather than an F.

Reverse
--The mintmark is tilted to the left.

Of course, all these diagnostics are present on this piece. Additionally, the surfaces retain a significant amount of mint luster. The obverse is dotted with numerous small specks of carbon, far fewer are present on the reverse. Strike details are generally strong, the only area of softness being the top of the bison's head. Light gray patina overall cedes to pale golden in a couple of areas on each side. Population: 25 in 58 (1 in 58+), 46 finer (9/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 22RJ, PCGS# 3939)
