Near-Gem 1801 Eagle, BD-2
Bright and Boldly Struck, Late Die State
1801 $10 MS64 NGC. BD-2, R.2. The BD-2 die marriage of the 1801 eagle is a relatively available one, fortunately for collectors of all stripes. We say "relatively available" advisedly, however, adding "within the context of an overall very rare early U.S. gold series," and the present near-Gem is, of course, conditionally rarer still. The Bass-Dannreuther reference estimates that 30,000 to 40,000 examples of the BD-2 were struck from the total 44,344 pieces reported for the year, making the 1801 BD-1, the only other die marriage for 1801 eagles, far rarer at R.5 (40-50 known).
Bass-Dannreuther estimate that 600 to 800 examples of the BD-2 survive today -- a survival rate of around 1.5%-2.7% in all grades combined. There are some notable high-grade survivors of the BD-2, however, including this piece. NGC has seen 29 submissions in this numeric grade, including two Prooflike specimens, with only two in MS65 finer (9/12). PCGS has seen 33 in MS64 with three in MS65, although all those totals are subject to certain duplications.
The die state of this piece is later than noted in Bass-Dannreuther, as both sides have been lapped, including the obverse. As expected, the fields are bright and fully prooflike with no trace of clash marks. The remarkable strike has brought up all of Liberty's hair strands and all the breast feathers on the eagle. The reflective surfaces are yellow-gold with a touch of orange, and abrasions are minimal. The most useful pedigree marker is a single contact in the field below the T in LIBERTY.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
