Description:
1909-S VDB Cent, MS66+ Red
Enormous Eye Appeal on This Key Date
1909-S VDB 1C MS66+ Red PCGS. CAC. This MS66+ Red PCGS-certified 1909-S VDB with CAC endorsement is obviously as fine as any collector can reach without going to the full Superb Gem grade level -- really just a hair's breadth away aesthetically and technically from this piece at any rate -- and a much higher price. PCGS has certified only nine coins in MS67 Red, and the last one we offered, the Joshua and Ally Walsh Collection specimen in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 3076, brought $97,750.
The present MS66+ Red coin shows a bright brick-red color more often seen on 1931-S cent than on 1909-S VDBs, yet totally original and a coin almost completely free of contact. A couple of microscopic ticks appear in the lower reverse field. The designer's initials and intervening periods are all sharp, as is the coin overall, save for trivial weakness at the top of the O in ONE. The obverse is razor-sharp, and both sides emit enormous eye appeal. Absolutely no carbon or flecking is visible. Of great importance to Registry Set collectors.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 22B2, PCGS# 2428)
