Remarkable Choice AU 1793 Chain Cent
AMERICA, S-2, B-2
1793 Chain 1C AMERICA AU55 PCGS Secure. S-2, B-2, High R.4. Of the so-called "collectible" Sheldon varieties of Chain cent, the S-2 is most challenging, being very scarce and a borderline rarity regardless of grade. (This statement necessarily excludes the NC-1 die pair, which has just a couple of coins known.) The letter R in LIBERTY is low relative to other obverses, with the bottom of that letter nearly parallel to the lowest serifs on the nearby T. The in-common reverse shows the 1 in the numerator of the fraction at center-right over the first 0 of the denominator and nearly touching the N of CENT.
With all Chain cent die pairs being genuinely scarce, there are far fewer of these historic coins than collectors to demand them. The effect becomes more pronounced with higher grades, and even midrange representatives such as VF20 coins pose a substantial challenge while commanding a sizable sum. A coin in the AU or Mint State range is genuinely rare even when all die pairs are taken together, which makes this Choice AU coin all the more noteworthy.
Still-glossy surfaces are rich medium-brown with an olive overtone. The central definition on the obverse is soft, yet the reverse chain-links have crisp outlines, and the all-around wear is minimal. The soft copper has picked up a few abrasions over the years, including one on the cheek and a graze that seems to underline the F in OF on the reverse, but the all-around eye appeal makes this a piece any collector with an appreciation for early U.S. coinage would be proud to own. For the AMERICA, No Periods varieties together, Population: 11 in 55, 11 finer (11/12). Our EAC grade XF45.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 223F, PCGS# 1341)
