Description:
1812 Capped Bust Half Eagle, BD-1, MS62
An Excellent Type Coin
1812 $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. BD-1, R.3. Wide 5D. The feather tip is positioned over the right edge of the flag of the 5, and the D is wholly under the branch stem (BD-2, Close 5D, has the D mostly under the arrow feather). BD-1 is the more available of two die pairs for the year, though still scarce in an absolute sense.
The semibright yellow-gold surfaces of this MS62 example display nearly full luster. Strong dentilation is apparent on both sides, and the design elements are well-centered on the planchet. The obverse design detail is strong, while a few areas on the reverse are not fully brought up, not uncharacteristic of the type. Some short, light adjustment marks are visible at URIB on the reverse ribbon. A few minute marks scattered about are inconsequential. Interestingly, the curved die line mentioned by Dannreuther and Bass (2006) that runs through the horizontal shield lines and ends in the left (facing) wing on many specimens of this variety is present on this coin.
This is a terrific-looking coin that will fit comfortably in a high-grade type collection. As such, it is worthy of a generous bid.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PL, PCGS# 8112)
