Description:
1871 Five Cent Pattern in Nickel
Three Cent Nickel Design on the Obverse
Judd-1050, PR67 Cameo
1871 5C Five Cents, Judd-1050, Pollock-1184, Low R.6, PR67 Cameo NGC. Ex: Exemplar Collection. The obverse bears a portrait of Liberty similar to that on the adopted three cent nickel piece. The date is below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above the central device. The reverse depicts a reversed Roman numeral five (backward) and the word CENTS is within a wreath. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. There was an attempt in 1868 to produce a uniform design for minor coins, and examples were struck in the cent, three cent nickel, and nickel five cent denominations. However, only the three cent nickel remained in production. The nickel composition of this pattern are relatively common, in pattern terms. This is a mostly all-brilliant example with good reflectivity in the fields and noticeable cameo contrast against the devices on each side. There are no post-striking defects, as one would expect from a PR67. (PCGS# 61309)
