Description:
1833 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, XF
Reverse Die Carried Over From 1830-32
1833 $2 1/2 XF40 NGC. BD-1, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. Only a single die combination was needed, understandably so, to coin the meager 4,160 reported examples of the 1833 quarter eagle, and only a single die state is known for those pieces, the BD state a/c. The c reverse die state is attributed to that die's reuse from coining the quarter eagles of 1830, 1831, and 1832, all in virtually the same state. This XF example shows some moderate wear on each side consistent with the grade, but the only singular marks are a couple of scrapes on Liberty's lower neck and a vertical mark between the 3s in the date. A diagonal scrape runs though the eagle's shield and onto the neck. Prevailing amber-gold color deepens near the rim to a brownish-gold.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FP, PCGS# 7673)
