Description:
Near-Mint 1815 Quarter, B-1
Enigmatic 'E' Counterstamp
1815 25C "E" Counterstamp AU58 NGC. B-1, R.1. The E and L counterstamps have confounded numismatists since their first appearance during the 1870s. Seen only on 1815 and 1825 quarters, a sizeable number are known, with the E stamp about twice as available as the L stamp. Current conjecture is that the counterstamps reflect an important vote of the Harmony Society commune in Pennsylvania circa 1832. This is a partly lustrous light steel-gray representative with an unabraded appearance and a hint of granularity near the date.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 23RG, PCGS# 5321)
