Description:
1867-S Type Two Twenty, AU58
Seldom Seen Finer
1867-S $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Mint State examples of the 1867-S double eagle are quite elusive, despite the large mintage of 920,750 pieces. These pieces were part and parcel of everyday commerce in the dusty, hardscrabble Old West, and today the average certified survivor grades a bit less than AU50. This example offers excellent mint luster overall but is rather densely marked with abrasions accounting for the AU58 grade rather than actual rub. One long, arcing scrape runs from the tip of the coronet, extending close to star 5. The medium-gold surfaces show a slight reddish patina, along with a decent strike for a Type Two twenty. NGC has seen only 22 submissions finer (1/13).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 26A2, PCGS# 8952)
