Description:
1871-S Quarter, Sharp, Satiny AU58
1871-S 25C AU58 NGC. Only 30,900 examples of the 1871-S quarter were struck, and most of them were "rode hard and put up wet" in the postbellum Old West. The average certified survivor is a bit more than XF40. Briggs (2008) writes that the 1871-S is a "very scarce coin in all grades with rarity escalating with grade. True rarity just now starting to be recognized. Usually found AG-F and with some sort of problem ... . In AU and Mint State grades, when problem-free, nice strike and nice luster. Very underrated." The surfaces on this near-Mint coin are indeed nice and well-struck, with semiprooflike fields and scattered deep russet hues on the reverse. Census: 2 in 58, 14 finer (1/13).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 23UP, PCGS# 5480)
