Better 'Broken A' Variety
1857-S $20 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 20E. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 1825. The Broken A is the most distinctive among the eight 1857-S reverses, described by Robert Evans in the July 2000 Numismatist. The A in STATES has an absent crossbar (Breen-7188). This feature was on the working hub, but was repaired by mint workers on the working dies for the other seven SSCA reverses. The butter-gold surfaces are minimally abraded and display substantial luster. Encapsulated in a gold label holder.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 2696, PCGS# 8922)
