Select Mint State 1865 Double Eagle
Boldly Lustrous Beauty
1865 $20 MS63 NGC. Surprisingly bright luster starts at pale canary but approaches sun-yellow on this double eagle dated to the final year of the Civil War. The reverse was in a late state of use, as evidenced by spidery die cracks at the upper legend and the top left side of the rays. The all-around definition is solid, and if not for a single significant abrasion that crosses between the hair under Liberty's coronet and her forehead, the piece would be a lock for a finer grade. Many high-grade examples of this double eagle issue were recovered from the S.S. Republic, though the present coin is not sourced.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)
