Description:
Near-Gem 1863 Seated Dollar
Attractive Condition Rarity
1863 $1 MS64 NGC. A light golden cast settles over otherwise silver-to-white surfaces that offer varying levels of opacity in the patina. Well-defined devices show a degree of frostiness on the highest design elements. While both sides show small faults, including a line of reed marks around stars 11 and 12, this near-Gem representative is uncommonly high-grade for a Civil War-era Seated dollar issue that emerged in an atmosphere where the coins were more precious as bullion than as "Union" money. Only 27,200 business strikes were produced. Census: 24 in 64, 4 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24Z6, PCGS# 6953)
