BD-5 1795 Ten Dollar, AU58
Rarest 13 Leaves Die Pair
1795 $10 13 Leaves AU58 NGC. BD-5, R.5. Among the rarer 13 Leaves die pairs for the 1795 eagle, distinguished by the gap between the leaves and the U in UNITED as well as the "attenuated" star 10 that is distant from Liberty's cap. Bass-Dannreuther Die State e/c, only state recognized as extant in Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, heavily lapped and cracked. Additional theoretical states include the less-lapped d/c and the terminal f/d.

Die state evidence paints an intriguing picture of the emission sequence for the 1795 ten dollar coins, the first year of issue for the largest denomination authorized by the Mint Act of 1792. The 9 Leaves or BD-3 variety, rarest of all 1795 ten dollar die pairs, matches Obverse 2 with Reverse B. The two dies were taken out of service at the same time, replaced with Obverse 3 and Reverse C (the BD-4) tandem. The BD-5 variety came about when Obverse 2, previously retired but still usable, was paired with the similarly worn-down but functional Reverse C; noted gold coin expert Harry W. Bass, Jr. emphasized this finding with an exclamation point in his notebook, as seen in Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties.

This is a near-Mint example of the BD-5 die pair, minimally worn with considerable radiance to the yellow-gold luster. A dull patch is noted just to the left of the eagle's head, and a few more echoes appear on either side. Detail is impressive, especially when the extensive die lapping is taken into consideration. All-in-all, a coin many collectors would be proud to own as a representative of the rarest 1795 13 Leaves die pair.
