Description:
1796 Draped Bust Dollar, AU55
Small Date, Small Letters, B-1, BB-66
1796 $1 Small Date, Small Letters AU55 NGC. B-1, BB-66, R.4. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. The very scarce BB-66 variety is identified by the point of star 13 pointing to the top fold of drapery and the berry positioned below the A in STATES on the reverse. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to strike five other varieties over a four-year period, from 1795 to 1798. Die evidence suggests that the BB-66 variety was actually struck in 1798.

The present coin is an attractive Choice AU specimen with just a touch of wear on the well-detailed design elements. The surfaces are remarkably free of significant distractions. A few traces of mint luster shine under shades of lavender-gray and champagne-gold patina. Census: 21 in 55, 23 finer (12/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24X3, PCGS# 6859)
