Spiked Shield 1857-S Double Eagle, MS65
S.S. Central America Treasure
1857-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Variety 20A. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 0330. One of the more heavily patinated and colorful examples of the "Spiked Shield" 1857-S Central America double eagle to make its way into a gold-label PCGS holder. Its orange-gold luster is strong, though cloudy areas occupy the right reverse as well as areas behind Liberty's head. A touch of rose is noted at the obverse rim southwest of the tip of the bust. Under the patina is a quality Gem. This piece comes with a book-style case, and while the paper certificate of authenticity is missing, the PCGS holder is testament enough to this coin's place in numismatic history.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2696, PCGS# 8922)
