1855 Arrows Dime, PR67 Cameo
Ex: Phil Kaufman Collection
1855 10C Arrows PR67 Cameo NGC. The mintage of 1855 Arrows proof dimes remains unknown, but was probably in the range of 50 to 75 coins, based on current population data. In all grades, NGC has certified 14 submissions and PCGS has certified 13 submissions. For issues in the 1860s, the grading services have certified a little less than half the original proof mintage of Seated Liberty dimes. The 27 submissions include just five pieces assigned a Cameo designation, with none described as Deep Cameo.

Minor but obvious doubling appears on the date and a few stars, likely the result of machine doubling, although Breen described his variety 3290 as an "Obvious double date" and continued to state that it is a very rare variety. Of course, all 1855 proof dimes can be called very rare. We disagree with Breen's Doubled Date assessment.

The finest certified pieces include this Superb Gem specimen from the Phil Kaufman Collection, and another that NGC grades PR67 Cameo. Stunning cameo contrast is evident on this coin, regardless of the angle from which the piece is viewed. The surfaces are fully struck, except for minor softness on the ribbing of the uppermost leaves. A few stray, inoffensive hairlines on the untoned, nicely preserved surfaces should not be confused with the faint die polish lines visible in the fields. Census: 1 in 67 Cameo, 1 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (2/13).
